Saint George Cathedral is a parish of the Orthodox Church in America. Our parish traces its beginnings back to 1938 when Macedonian and Bulgarian immigrants who had come to Toledo sought to establish an Orthodox parish. The parish was formally founded in 1948 and placed under the patronage of the Holy Greatmartyr and Trophy-Bearer George.
The Orthodox Church in America is in communion with the family of Orthodox Christian Churches throughout the world which comprise the universal Orthodox Church (Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Antiochian Orthodox, etc.)

The Orthodox Church in America shares the same faith, doctrine, worship, and mission as Orthodox churches in other parts of the world: a unity of faith lived out since the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost. Faith in the Holy Trinity and the Good News of salvation brought about by the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ are at the center of Orthodox Christianity. Living in accord with and witnessing to the Orthodox Christian faith in our contemporary society has been and continues to be strongly emphasized.
Father Paul Gassios is pastor of the parish. On June 17th, 2007 the founder of our Diocese, His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill (Yoncev) fell asleep in the Lord. Fr. Don Freude, Chancellor of the Bulgarian Diocese is the Temporary Administrator of the diocese along with the Spiritual Council of the diocese. Until a new bishop is elected , His Grace Bishop Melchizedek of Pittsburgh and Westerrn Pennsylvania is serving as the temporary Bishop of our Diocese (i.e. Locum Tenens).
